Dr. Derek Davidson

Derek Davidson teaches playwriting and theatre history here at Appalachian State, and previously taught at Carnegie Mellon, Ashland University, and Eastern Tennessee State University. His play So This Happened received a staged reading at The Tank in NYC last February. Solo performance pieces—Ox and Furrow—were part of Piccolo Spoleto and Asheville Fringe Festivals, and Furrow had its NYC premiere in 2020. Groundwork—a solo piece co-written with Mike Ostroski—has appeared in solo festivals across the country, including the Hollywood Fringe and the United Solo Theatre Festival (NYC). His short play Blackjack has been performed internationally and was subsequently published in Lighting the Way: An Anthology of Short Plays about the Climate Crisis. His chapter—"‘Can We Talk?’ Forum Theatre as Rehearsal for Climate Change Interventions”—appeared in Theatre Pedagogy in the Era of Climate Crisis (2021). Dr. Davidson has published articles and poems in Grey Sparrow, Indelible, Jalmurra, Iron Mountain Review, Southern Theatre Magazine.
